you very much, chairman mike thompson. this is our second hearing. it has been a good one. and i am deeply grateful for everybody's comments. i have a number of things -- maybe we can do them all. maybe we cannot. i noticed the president, in his remarks, it seems like he has almost given up negotiating. he is saying here's what we will do and everybody that is with me should get on board. but between these simple things , would any of you just a volunteer with you think is the most important accomplishments that those of us who have been through these hearings could accomplish in the 113th congress? a ban semi-automatic assault weapons, require background checks for all gun sales. repeal thart. the ban high commit -- and high capacity ammunition magazines. reduce violent crime in our communities. i just mental health crisis -- and just mental health crisis were 25% more of the population might come under that category. who can comment about any particular order in this undertaking that you would like to see us start off with? any volunteers? >> thank you, rep. when you ask a pediatr

the senate, clinton in 1992, then yes. that wave will crash over the mike or targeting, but in a close race, this is the future, and we got whipped. >> one quick question, and we are all going to give very quick replies. >> we have to talk about this in smaller terms. this is the land of liberty, but our own government is stifling it in every walk of life -- i am a physician. lyndon johnson has destroyed american healthcare, the health- care profession. i had a 450-pound man the other day telling me to f myself because i kept pressing him to become healthy. if he did, he would lose his social security disability income. the other day, mike i.t. employee, bright young kid, high-school graduate, just got himself $110,000 job -- my i.t. employee. got his home loan pulled because he had a squabble with a crooked builder. dropped the house, gave away his $1,000, but he built a house, and he cannot buy it because the bank tanked his loan. this guy is the most reliable thing you could ever imagine, and then we read that dodd- frank and obama would not allow it. do we have to find these

mike? hello, hello. >> as they said in the 20 70 campaign, help is on the way. [laughter] so when the mike wasn't working i told all sorts of embarrassing secrets about jay nordlinger and i trust all of you got them in full lurid detail. this past week has been a momentous week. president obama was sworn in to a second term. i guess what made the news is beyonce apparently lip synced throughout the inaugural. not as widely reported was the fact that president obama did as well. who knew that his teleprompter could play music? we saw this week an ode to liberalism, unabashed, unapologetic, i have to say sitting there it occurred to me somewhere the sea must be rising now. and it is easy for us as conservatives to look at the november election and that exhult -- exultant, unabashed embrace of the left and to have a moment's despair. let me say this room is critical to preventing that to happen. "national review" has a lornings -- long, long history of standing athwart history and yelling "halt." we can stop this. we can turn it around and in fact i am right now incredibly, incredibl

with us. you are not just one of my closest friends, but one of my closest advisers, and mike -- like everybody here, i cannot imagine the white house without you. thank you for signing up for this very, very difficult job, as jack lew will testify. i know you will always give it to me straight, as only a friend can, telling me not only what i want to hear, but more importantly, when i need to hear to make the best possible decisions on behalf of the american people. so, for me, michelle, your friends and colleagues that are here today, thank you for taking this assignment. congratulations. [applause] [applause] >> i just have one more thing to add. we made a number of personnel announcements today. there is going to be an incredible team that denis mcdonough will help lead, but i thought i would take the occasion to just embarrass somebody. some of you may know that today is david's last day in the white house. i had to hide this in the end of my remarks because i knew he would not want me to bring it up, so we had some secret squirrel stuff going on here to avoid him thinking that w
